The new year is approaching and it is the time of year when many people begin to make resolutions for the coming year. All of them have good intentions but not all of them start and even fewer actually accomplish what they set out to achieve. Forbes magazine reported a whopping eight percent actually achieve their goals. Why do so few people actually achieve their resolutions? It is called lack of adequate planning. It is one thing to say you are going to do something and quite another to actually sit down and plan the execution of it. The fact is that many people do not know how to plan adequately.
Below are the actual steps that have been used many times by many people who used them to set and achieved their goals, including me. This will work if you will.
Step 1: Determine your goal: What do you want to achieve? Setting the goal is as simple as determining what you want.
Step 2: Why do you want to achieve this goal? How will it benefit you and everyone involved? You must have an overwhelming reason to achieve this goal. Your reason must motivate you to the point that you are driven to work at all hours regardless of the obstacles. The more overwhelming the reason, the easier it will be to achieve the goal.
Step 3: What do you need to accomplish this goal? Training, equipment, or electronics, etc? This could be as small as pen and paper or additional training, school or it a vehicle or equipment. List what you need, where you can get it, how much it costs. The more detail the better.
Step 4: Who do you need to help you get there? Lawyer, doctor, accountant, coach, family, etc. We cannot do it alone. If you try to do this without support you will become discouraged and feel that the goal is too big. When you have a team of people helping you achieve your goal you are more likely to achieve it.
Step 5: Identify the obstacles that you will encounter while achieving your goal. It is obvious that you will encounter obstacles. It is important that you identify as many as possible and overcome them. Find the solution to the problem, before it happens so that when it does happen, you will be prepared. If you are prepared, you will not get stuck.
Step 6: Make a list of the steps that are needed. Note: these do not have to be in order. They will begin to take their order as you begin to list them. The steps do not have to complete in order to begin. Setting and achieving a goal does not mean that you are not subject to add, change or delete a step.
Step 7: Determine a completion date. We area people driven by deadlines. Put a completion date on your goal.
Step 8: Start taking the steps in your plan. Do not let fear control you. Fear is the number one reason people so not achieve their goals. It is described as False Evidence Appearing Real. Once you take that first step you will see that it was not at all what you feared it would be.
